Mélodie pour J. is a short piece for violin and piano. It portrays several people I have known whose first names began with the letter J.
I had one particular person in mind: after losing her husband, she concealed a profound melancholy and an irreparable sadness beneath an appearance of joy and good-natured cheerfulness.
The piece therefore explores the feeling of loneliness, the course of life that cannot be stopped, and the wounds that never fully heal, even as time takes its course.
The piano motif evokes the ticking of a clock, against which the violin expresses human emotions in counterpoint.
